And predictions resound of a <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/map.html\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong><em>death threat<\/em><\/strong><\/a> aimed at the entire human race. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-imf\/imf-chief-says-pandemic-will-unleash-worst-recession-since-great-depression-idUSKCN21R1SM\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em><strong>statement early in April 2020,<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong> <\/strong><\/em>the IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said, \u201cJust three months ago, we expected positive per capita income growth in over 160 of our member countries in 2020\u2026Today, that number has been turned on its head: we now project that over 170 countries will experience negative per capita income growth this year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COVID-19 and its global impact are bad news. No doubts there. But its impact has become a good omen of the heights of human resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social distancing is only one visible impact of COVID-19. If community response is an indicator, the post-COVID-19 world will be a better place. Much more than the world before it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impact On People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sources report that Zoom\u2019s users have grown from 200 million to 300 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/technology\/zoom-has-skyrocketed-to-300-million-daily-users-up-50percent-from-the-beginning-of-april-even-as-the-company-battles-a-privacy-backlash\/ar-BB133Rz3?li=AA4Zoy\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong><em>less than one month<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/zoom-updates-user-privacy-security-223202101.html\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong><em>security concerns<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>,<\/em><\/strong> and the software\u2019s existing limitations on time and usage. It\u2019s not the only virtual meeting software out there either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Zoom\u2019s success tells us is that businesses are finally ready to embrace the benefits of remote work. Earlier, it was an inconvenience or a privilege. Now its <strong><em>benefits<\/em><\/strong> are finally being recognized. By everyone. The onset of remote work makes it possible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurlawrence.net\/blog\/solving-the-gender-pay-gap-through-a-decentralized-talent-economy\/\"><strong><em>excluded talent<\/em><\/strong><\/a> to take part again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The implicit bias that existed in our earlier treatment of talent, has diminished. An individual\u2019s: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2013 Physical disability<br>\u2013 Caregiving status<br>\u2013 Number and age of dependents<br>\u2013 Age<br>\u2013 Ethnicity<br>\u2013 Religious views<br>\u2013 Gender and marital status<br>\u2013 Sexual orientation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Were in fact, reasons potent enough to disadvantage them in the corporate world. Often, they were reasons to prevent entry at all, let alone mobility. The problem was that these biases were hard to prove. But they were still measured and expressed themselves in unhealthy statistics. One report discusses the costs of <strong><em>\u2018<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inthesetimes.com\/article\/22197\/grooming-gap-women-economics-wage-gender-sexism-make-up-styling-dress-code\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong><em>looking the part\u2019 here,<\/em><\/strong><\/a> and how the cost is disproportionately high for women. &nbsp;Even brands seen as progressive come under fire for enforcing gender-based rules<strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-london-36272893\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong><em>not aligned with business and clearly discriminatory.<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COVID-19 forced us to remove the line between \u201cemployee\u201d and\n\u201cworker\u201d. Value has rapidly shifted from eligibility to productivity. When\neveryone&#8211;from BoDs to interns must fit a 3\u201d X 2\u201d virtual window, what you\u2019re\nwearing stops mattering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has also called to attention the difference between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2013 Flexibilities actually needed and<br>\u2013 Concessions demanded before COVID-19<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who justified performance slack with parental responsibilities are now accountable. Freeloaders are less invisible. Thanks to remote work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COVID-19 has given people a new perspective on time too. Businesses enjoy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2013 Improved time management<br>\u2013 Enhanced visibility across processes<br>\u2013 Goal alignment<br>\u2013 Individual discipline and<br>\u2013 Accountability<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge will be to recapture these strengths in their\nmost zealous form. <strong><em>After<\/em><\/strong> the workforce returns to the office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impact On Society<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States is fortunate to have social security and <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-usa-congress\/senate-passes-2-trillion-bill-for-strange-and-evil-coronavirus-crisis-idUKKBN21C1C0\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong><em>stimulus packages<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong> And a per-capita population that will not weigh down its institutions or infrastructure. Not all economies are that fortunate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many, the lockdown carries real fears of mass starvation and health crises on top of COVID-19. Their governments are either indifferent, apathetic, or incompetent to reduce their suffering. And charities and NGOs can only do so much after curtailed transport and commerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s in these economies that social enterprise comes to the rescue. Via:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8211; Innovation<\/p><p>&#8211; Frugality and<\/p><p>&#8211; Identification of the most critical \u2018connecting points\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurlawrence.net\/blog\/the-right-approach-to-social-entrepreneurship\/\"><strong><em>Social enterprise<\/em><\/strong><\/a> delivers solutions to those who most need them. Without burdening other stakeholders to breaking point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Innovative alternatives to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2013 Ventilators<br>\u2013 PPEs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Owe themselves less to the public sector or up-for-glam\nstartups. And more to determined, technocrats and specialists out to make a\ndifference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impact On Business And The Future Of Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/uk-global-markets-themes-graphic\/take-five-quarter-life-crisis-idUKKBN21E2S9\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em><strong>global economy has certainly taken a hit<\/strong><\/em><\/a> from COVID-19. And <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/map.html\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong><em>after human life<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, our industry has been the pandemic\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/04\/23\/an-unemployment-rate-of-23percent-the-real-jobless-picture-is-coming-together.html\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em><strong>greatest casualty.<\/strong><\/em><\/a> But is the COVID-19 led slowdown the only cause? What about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2013 Bloated organograms?<br>\u2013 Porous structures that overemphasize scapegoating and undermine personal accountability?<br>\u2013 Manufactured abuses of authority that attack healthy corporate cultures?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They damage organizations, in the same way, COVID-19 attacks\nhealthy bodies. With no warning, a long incubation period, and no known cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A positive of COVID-19 has been the return of intellectual\nand entrepreneurial humility. Ironic, yes? Businesses deemed too big to fail\nhave been the first to \u2018cut the fat.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reality of their corporate fiction has finally surfaced.\nFor their employees, and for society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Businesses who will survive will do so via <strong><em>agility,<\/em><\/strong> determination, and painful introspection. Businesses that never looked beyond short-term results have to build their \u201clong term.\u201d Now. They\u2019ll return to work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2013 Better skilled<br>\u2013 More prepared to deal with emerging business challenges<br>\u2013 Equipped with more ideas and a<br>\u2013 Shared global world view<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Innovation as an outcome of the COVID-19 era will create new ways of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2013 Identifying<br>\u2013 Approaching<br>\u2013 Managing and<br>\u2013 Building the workforce of the future.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will translate into more<strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurlawrence.net\/blog\/driving-data-backed-business-decisions-with-an-effective-performance-management-framework\/\"><strong><em>meaningful ways of recognizing our best talent<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The uncertainty and fear surrounding COVID-19 has linked it\nwith an air of gloom.
